Railways: The Making of a Nation
Historian Liz McIvor explores how Britain's expanding rail network was the spark to a social revolution, starting in the 1800s and continuing through to modern times. A fast system of transportation shaped so many areas of our industrial nation - from what we eat to where we live, work and play. The railways generated economic activity but they also changed the nature of business itself. They even changed attitudes to time and how we set our clocks. Our railways may have reflected deep class divisions, but they also brought people together as never before, and helped forge a new sense of national identity. This episode looks at how you organise a rail network in a country made up of separate local time zones and no recognised timetables. Before the railways, our country was divided and local time was proudly treasured. Clocks in the west of the country were several minutes behind those set in the east. The railways wanted the country to step to a new beat in a world of precise schedules and timetables that recognised Greenwich Mean Time. Not everyone was keen to step in line, and some complained about the new world of one single time zone and precise schedules.

After trying a pre-nap workout with Tiniest Fluffiest Bunny, practising yoga with Book Cub and pillow drumming with Bad Idea Puppy, a frustrated Love Monster gives up and thinks he might as well start getting ready for the party. He heads over to his decks and puts on a song just before the sleep timer goes off, and everyone awakes full of energy. As everyone boogies to the beats, Tiniest Fluffiest Bunny looks over to the decks, but Love Monster is nowhere to be seen. She goes around the back of the decks and finds him curled up underneath them, finally fast asleep. Sometimes, when you give up the struggle, you find the snuggle.

The Twirlywoos decide to move more things from inside the house to the outside, while the man obliviously continues reading. They get carried away, and when the man finally looks up from his book, he finds he is surrounded by the entire contents of the living room, even the sofa! Peekaboo gets stuck outside the boat and goes around it looking in through different windows and making noises which the Twirlywoos hear, but can't see who it is. Finally, Peekaboo manages to get back inside through the top of the boat.

The Twirlywoos are in a shop filled with bric-a-brac where they watch a lady putting brightly coloured cardboard stars next to some items in the window display. She leaves the box of stars on the counter and goes into a back room. The Twirlywoos come out and take stars from the box, putting them next to as many different things as they can, until all the stars are used up. The lady comes back to discover that every item in the shop now has a star next to it! The Stop-Go Car visits the boat and brings the Twirlywoos some red, yellow and blue coloured blocks. The Twirlywoos decide to line them up, taking turns to place one colour next to the other. They make a long line of blocks which stretches across the boat, finishing outside Peekaboo's hole. While the Twirlywoos are busy celebrating, Peekaboo peeps out and knocks the end block, causing it to fall into the one next to it, until they all collapse, domino-style! This is repeated several times, with the Twirlywoos setting up the blocks and Peekaboo knocking them down again. In the end, the Twirlywoos chase after their rings, and Peekaboo takes the blocks into the hole.

The Twirlywoos decide to line them up, taking turns to place one colour next to the other. They make a long line of blocks which stretches across the boat, finishing outside Peekaboo's hole. While the Twirlywoos are busy celebrating, Peekaboo peeps out and knocks the end block, causing it to fall into the one next to it, until they all collapse, domino-style! This is repeated several times, with the Twirlywoos setting up the blocks and Peekaboo knocking them down again. In the end, the Twirlywoos chase after their rings, and Peekaboo takes the blocks into the hole.

The hooter goes off and as the Twirlywoos fly off, they send the stack of hats flying into the air just as the lady comes out of the changing room - and they all land on top of her head! Peekaboo is out in the open just as the Twirlywoos return to the boat. On sneaking back to the hole in the wall, the tea machine pops up from the floor and Peekaboo is left balancing on top of it! The Twirlywoos operate the tea machine unaware that Peekaboo is on top, and they don't even notice when the inflating fruit bounces Peekaboo up in the air. When the fruit is fully inflated and Great Big Hoo presses the button to release it, Peekaboo jumps up and down on the inflated fruit so the juice squeezes out extra fast. Finally, the tea machine goes back down and Peekaboo races back to the hole in the wall.

It’s Take-a-Treat Day, and Love Monster is wearing a gumball machine costume and is on his way to meet Bad Idea Puppy. They’re going to go treat-taking together, and Bad Idea Puppy is determined to set a new Fluffytown speed-treat-taking record. He’s wearing a rocket costume with various buttons and panels on it. He readies a stopwatch and a map, then sprints off leaving Love Monster behind. Bad Idea Puppy goes so fast that he whooshes all the treats up. He says he needs to go even faster to beat the speed-treat record. He presses a button on his costume, and wheels pop out of his shoes. He zooms off again, leaving Love Monster waddling after him. He presses another button on his costume, and out pops a huge gramophone-like nozzle, connected to his treat bag. Bad Idea Puppy announces the device as his Turbo-Take-a-Treat-a-Tron and zooms off again, determined to beat the record.

The cast and creators come up with their top ten sketches or characters, and the public chooses its favourite Goodness Gracious Me moment of all - revealed at the end of this one-off special. Originally created by Sanjeev Bashkar, Meera Syal and writer Anil Gupta for Radio 4, the show transferred to BBC Two in 1998. On screen, Sanjeev and Meera were joined by Kulvinder Ghir and Nina Wadia, with a brilliant supporting cast which included Dave Lamb, Amanda Holden, Fiona Allen and Emma Kennedy. Between them, they created over 100 characters, dozens of catchphrases and some of the standout comedy moments of all time.

Meera Syal takes an affectionate, comedic look back at the Asian programmes she grew up watching with her family - not always willingly - which helped shape her and many others’ childhoods and sense of belonging, from cookery and music programmes to the groundbreaking series like Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan. This started out advising the UK’s new arrivals how to adapt to everyday objects like lamps, but quickly evolved into something far more significant - even though watching it involved a young Meera being dragged out of bed every Sunday morning.
